Mario Martone ‘s new film, inspired by Goliarda Sapienza, is the only Italian title in the running for the Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival . With Valeria Golino, Matilda De Angelis and Elodie, “Fuori” tells the story of the saving power of human encounters and writing.
Director Mario Martone will be in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival with his highly anticipated film “Fuori” , the only Italian title selected to compete for the Palme d’Or .
The film is loosely based on L’università di Rebibbia , an autobiographical book by Goliarda Sapienza , in which the writer recounts the two months spent in the Roman prison in the 1980s, after a jewel theft. The screenplay, written by Martone himself together with Ippolita di Majo , transforms that prison experience into a story of formation and rebirth.

Valeria Golino plays Goliarda Sapienza , who knows the Italian writer well, one of the most significant voices of twentieth-century Italian literature . Golino has in fact dedicated a television series to her most famous novel, The Art of Joy , entrusting the role of the protagonist to Tecla Insolia. The actress and director will be joined by Matilda De Angelis and Elodie in the roles of two young inmates with whom the protagonist forms a deep relationship. The cast also includes Corrado Fortuna , Antonio Gerardi and Francesco Gheghi , completing a choral and intense narration, capable of conveying the complexity of the female prison microcosm.
The plot of “Fuori” follows the story of Goliarda, whose entry into prison marks the beginning of a journey of self-rediscovery.
The encounter with other inmates, especially with Roberta , a repeat offender and political activist, becomes the trigger for an inner transformation. A bond, the one with Roberta, incomprehensible to those who live “outside”, but capable of giving the writer a new vision of freedom and creativity.
