The Coupling Collection merges strength and sophistication in such an intriguing way — what sparked the idea behind combining industrial design with fine jewelry?
The initial concept for the Coupling Collection was born on a construction site in Singapore. I was touring the new Singaporean transit maintenance facility and all the industrial products being installed just struck me as beautiful in their own way. Although the purpose of their design was for commercial construction, the thought that went into each detail captivated me. It got me thinking about reimagining themes from the world of industrial product design into the fine jewelry space.

You’ve built Gauhar Jewelry with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. What advice would you give to young designers or business owners trying to find their own path in today’s competitive creative world?
My advice to young designers just getting started is to find a niche within jewelry, and focus on that. Because it is such a competitive space, I think the idea of casting a “wide net” doesn’t necessarily work. If you can make a name for yourself in a specific area within the broader jewelry world, it is easier to expand outward into other areas that interest you.

Your work shows a deep understanding of contrast — structure and softness, precision and emotion. How do you find balance between creativity and discipline in your daily life?
This is always the challenge, how do you take your artist hat off, and put on the business one. I would say it’s a moving target, some weeks you hit the bullseye, striking the perfect balance. While others, you get stuck going down a rabbit hole. Routines can be helpful, but at the same time creativity isn’t something that can be regimented, it strikes when it strikes, and you have to seize the moment.

Beyond jewelry, what inspires your creativity on an everyday level — is it art, travel, family, or something entirely different?
I’m inspired by all of the above, I have been very fortunate to have lived in a number of places around the world with very different cultures, that inspires me. My children certainly inspire me almost daily with the wonderful joy and curiosity that children bring into the world. Music, art, interior design and fashion amaze and inspire me as well.

You manage both the creative and business sides of the brand. How do you keep that balance without losing focus on what truly matters to you?
Like any founder run business, the name of the game is wear many hats. The creative side of the business comes more naturally to me because it is why I started it in the first place. Learning the business end as I went was a challenge at times, but I have grown to love it as well as my experience has grown. I try to look at the business like an engine, each cog must work in unison to create a good outcome.

What role does family play in your life and career — do they influence your approach to design or the way you lead your company?
I wouldn’t say my family necessarily influences my approach to design, but they are certainly entwined in my professional life most days. When I am in Connecticut, I often work from home so there is a lot of balancing life with a young family and the daily operations of Gauhar Jewelry.

When you’re not designing or working, how do you like to spend your time?
I have always loved fitness and movement, if I can exercise, take a walk outside or play sports, I always try to do something active. I would love to see the company grow into something that goes beyond my time in the leadership role as a founder, both of my sons are showing an early interest in visual design and appreciate the beauty in the world around them, who knows, maybe Gauhar Jewelry could grow into a multigenerational family business, which would make me incredibly happy.

Where do you see yourself wearing these bracelets — at work, out with friends, or for a night out?
Anywhere! It’s entirely up to the individual collector. I designed the bangles to withstand everyday wear and tear, with a nod to the industrial objects that inspired me — strong yet beautiful. Whether you’re at the beach or at work, these bracelets will complement your outfit for any occasion.

Your collection can be layered or worn alone — how do you approach stacking your bracelets and rings for a balanced look?
The more the merrier! I truly love to stack, mix, and match — to collect my favorite pieces, appreciate the craftsmanship, and cherish each one I own. It might not look balanced to everyone, but it feels balanced to me. When you stack enough, it starts to feel like a complete whole. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have fun and showcase one’s creativity.

These bracelets can be customized in so many ways. What details would make yours truly yours?
I intentionally made every aspect of these bangles customizable — from the metals to the stones. We can create almost any combination of materials, making each piece truly one of a kind.
