L’Officiel Monaco has discovered the perfect venue for such an experience, offering not only outstanding cuisine but also an evening filled with entertainment and sophistication – L’Europe restaurant at Grand Hotel Europe. This unique spot promises an unforgettable culinary adventure, blending exquisite food with a captivating atmosphere for a truly remarkable night out.
The Art Nouveau-inspired dining venue of L’Europe restaurant in St. Peterburg was crafted in 1905 by architect Carl Makkenzen. Its interior boasts a mesmerizing stained glass window featuring “Apollo in His Chariot,” a creation based on sketches by Leon Benois. This stunning piece adds a magical touch to the restaurant, while the intricately carved wooden balconies and five private alcoves create a warm and intimate ambiance in the grand space. The window’s depiction of Apollo, the Greek deity of the sun, art, and protector of travelers, seems to beckon weary guests to find solace and comfort within the restaurant’s welcoming environment.
The establishment quickly evolved, and by 1908, it underwent a major redesign during the building’s renovation, overseen by Fyodor Lidval. This renovation introduced a grand stained glass ceiling, inspired by a sketch from artist Karl Brencen, with possible contributions from Nikolai Roerich. The restaurant’s rich history is marked by notable events, such as its early adoption of electric lighting and its role during the Siege of Leningrad from September 1941 to April 1942, when the hotel together with teh restaurant housed Evacuation Hospital No. 991, the largest surgical facility on the Leningrad front.
The restaurant’s guest list reads like a who’s who of high society, with illustrious patrons including Queen Elizabeth II, Igor Stravinsky, Fyodor Chaliapin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Jacques Chirac, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Michael Douglas. In 1979, Elton John even gave an impromptu performance on the restaurant’s stage, captivated by its inviting atmosphere. Throughout its storied existence, the restaurant has remained a vibrant hub of St. Petersburg’s social life.
Since 2019, the prestigious American publication Wine Spectator honored the restaurant with its Award of Excellence, acknowledging it for having one of the finest wine selections globally. Additionally, Wow-travel magazine ranked the buffet breakfast at L’Europe among the top five worldwide, lauding its cathedral-like grandeur and an array of dishes that dazzles the eye.
Every other Friday, the restaurant hosts Tchaikovsky Nights, featuring ballet performances of the White Adagio from “Swan Lake” on its stage. Saturdays bring a touch of romance with Latino Night, and twice a month on Sundays, guests can indulge in L’Europe’s renowned brunches from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM, which offer a lavish spread accompanied by live music. Tchaikovsky Night celebrates the legendary composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who was a guest at the Grand Hotel Europe. The evening features a candlelit ambiance with opera arias performed by an ensemble and ballet excerpts from “The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake.”
Tchaikovsky’s connection with the Grand Hotel Europe began in July 1877 when he visited with his wife, Antonina Miliukova. He wrote to his brother Anatoly in Moscow, praising the hotel as “very good, even luxurious.” In July 1886, during another visit to St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky returned to the hotel, where he coincidentally crossed paths with Johann Strauss. Patrons of the event are captivated by the exquisite Art Nouveau design, highlighted by the historic stained-glass panel depicting Apollo in His Chariot.
The Tchaikovsky Nights have become a celebrated cultural event in St. Petersburg. The evenings feature captivating ballet performances, including the pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince from “The Nutcracker,” and the White Adagio from “Swan Lake,” which serve as the climax of the Tchaikovsky Night. Classical music pieces are performed by a live ensemble, while guests indulge in a refined candlelit dinner, curated by Denis Sobolev, the Executive Chef of the Grand Hotel Europe.
