The most highly anticipated movies coming out this year that you don’t want to miss.
In the golden age of streaming, it is always interesting to see a movie rise above the masses. This year we have several long-awaited movies coming out, and from this selection, there are a few in particular that have the public in a chokehold waiting for the release day.
Ari Aster, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar, is back to bless our screens and reinvent our nightmares with a new movie that is rumored to redefine the horror genre. Beau is Afraid is an upcoming surrealist horror comedy movie from the A24 studios. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Beau, a neurotic man who finds himself in a world of bizarre events when making the journey back home to visit his mother. The movie is described as a “decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present” and we can’t wait to see what this acid-colored horror trip has in store for us.
Beau is Afraid is scheduled to be released in April 2023.
From Harley Quinn to Tonya Harding, no one does a biographical movie like Margot Robbie. This year, Margot has particularly large pink shoes to fill as she steps into the role of Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie movie. Other than the fact that the movie is as star-studded with Hollywood A-listers as the MET in May, we don’t really know what to expect. The overall plot of the movie has been carefully guarded, alluding that the film might just put a spin on the old blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world storyline and surprise us all with a modern depiction of the iconic “toystress”. After all, if there is one director who thrives on developing well-written female characters challenging the status quo, wouldn’t it be the director of Little Women and Lady Bird? Here’s hoping!
Barbie is scheduled to be released in July of 2023.
Rarely has there been this much fuzz surrounding a single movie, but here we are. Oppenheimer is an upcoming biographical film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and it stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist and “father of the atomic bomb”. The film is based on the American novel Prometheus, and while the premise of the movie is undeniably fascinating, the real selling point is the casting. The supporting cast includes Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, and many more. With this much talent crammed into one movie, it is hard to imagine it not doing exceedingly well. Oppenheimer is already being predicted as a box office hit, likely continuing Nolan’s $1 billion box office track record. Will the movie live up to the high expectations? We shall see. But one thing is certain: it will be explosive!
