Working remotely is great! It means you get a better work-life balance, you don’t have to suffer through long and sometimes expensive commutes and you can work from anywhere in the world. However it can also feel lonely and make it harder to stay connected with other people. In fact, studies show that as many as 61% of remote workers feel lonely because of working from home. So how do you keep yourself from becoming isolated from the people around you while working remotely? Let’s find out.
Make Plans
Set specific times across weeks or months for doing something social. Invite your friends over to a café or an exhibition or set up a museum outing together after your work hours or during weekends. If you have friends and family in different countries, set up calls with them, catch up on each other’s lives or watch a movie. You can try setting up social events at work either online or offline. Even a few such outings go a long way towards staying in touch with your friends, loved ones and simply the people around you.
Events
Find interesting events in your area or somewhere that you won’t have to commute to for long. Go to educational exhibitions, art or fashion shows or even industry-related events. You’ll both learn something new, see interesting new things and probably meet new people. Whatever you do, you’ll stay connected and feel better.
Environment
Keep your work life separate from your home life. Once your work for the day is done, put your computer and work files away and make time for rest and relaxation. Dedicate time to your family and personal matters. You can also change your working environment more often. Work from out of a cafe or some other social space where you will be able to constantly socialise with the people around you. Not only will this make your work days more enjoyable, but it will also make you far happier, as you will be surrounded by people all the time and you’ll feel less lonely.
Classes
Take up lessons in something you’re interested in in your local area or online, learn a new language or a skill. No matter whether you take individual classes or group courses, you’ll get to interact with people a lot and you’ll be able to learn something new. What’s more, by going to classes you’ll be improving your mental and physical health by staying social, improving your memory and keeping your brain active.
Tailor your solutions to your needs and do what makes you feel better
Staying connected to people and the wider society around you while working from home can be a challenging endeavour. It can seem difficult and more time-consuming than usual, but it can be done and it is so worth it. So get out there and make every effort to socialise and interact with your friends, family and the [eople around you. Go to cafes, go to the gym, go on travelling trips. Most importantly, tailor your solutions to your needs and do what makes you feel better.
