A Life Curated

With an instinct for beauty and an international perspective, Hans Hjelmqvist has built a distinctive presence in the world of contemporary design. Based in Stockholm, his perspective was shaped early on by years spent working as a model in the international fashion world, from Tokyo and Paris to Milan and New York. Today, he occupies a space between aesthetics, communication, and culture, bringing together a cultivated eye with a deep understanding of the people and ideas behind design. This perspective has fueled long-standing collaborations with some of Europe’s most iconic brands, including Fritz Hansen, Iittala, and Foscarini, where Hjelmqvist bridges aesthetics and identity across disciplines and borders. Over the years, he has also led press launches and creative projects with some of the world’s most visionary designers, from Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec to Patricia Urquiola and Jaime Hayon.

Hans, your career spans cities, disciplines, and aesthetics. How would you describe your personal design philosophy?

For me, design is a language, and I’m drawn to things that speak softly but clearly. I’m less interested in trends and more in tone, presence, and feeling. I look for objects and environments that create atmosphere. That’s true whether it’s a handthrown ceramic, a brutalist building, or the texture of a perfectly tailored coat. Good design doesn’t demand attention. It holds it.

This instinct extends beyond objects and environments. For Hjelmqvist, the most meaningful creative work is as much about relationships and context as it is about form. He describes himself as a “translator of context,” someone who brings people, ideas, and expressions together in the right place at the right time. It is an approach rooted in subtlety rather than spectacle.

In the world of premium design and craftsmanship, Hjelmqvist believes that clarity, authenticity, and restraint are what ultimately distinguish a brand. These are the qualities that build trust and lasting relevance among audiences who value craftsmanship, enduring quality, and thoughtful production.

Your aesthetic has been described as both Nordic and international. How do you navigate those identities?

I see them as complementary. Scandinavian design gave me a foundation in clarity, restraint, and integrity. But living abroad, especially in Japan and Italy, taught me about emotional detail, sensuality, and imperfection. I’m always looking for that balance: stillness with soul, structure with softness. That duality fascinates me. It’s the space where my aesthetic lives.

You often work closely with designers, artists, and architects. What do you look for in a creative collaboration?

I look for people who care. People who obsess over proportions, materials, and intention. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a lamp or a building. When the person behind it is emotionally invested, you can feel it. I love working with design studios or stepping into an artist’s atelier, where you can sense the energy in the room. That intimacy is what elevates the work.

Your presence in design circles is often described as understated but powerful. How do you see your role in this world?

I think of myself as a listener, someone who reads context. I love connecting ideas, people, and aesthetics that belong together. Sometimes that means bringing a designer into the right room. Other times, it’s simply knowing when to step back and let something speak for itself. Influence doesn’t have to be loud. It can be quiet and precise.

Your social media presence feels thoughtfully curated, offering glimpses of your personal aesthetic and inspirations. What guides what you choose to share?

Instagram for me is more of a moodboard than a marketing tool. It’s a space where I explore what inspires me, from architecture and landscapes to fabrics and color. Sometimes it’s a memory, sometimes a collaboration. What I choose to share isn’t calculated, but it’s always personal. It’s all part of the same visual language.

What stays with me isn’t just the form, but the feeling it creates. Often, it’s the people behind the work, their process, their passion, and their way of seeing things.

Over the years, Hjelmqvist’s work has also extended into projects that connect design with broader cultural narratives. One such project was his role as producer of a documentary on Princess Christina, sister of the King of Sweden. Filmed over the course of a year, the documentary offered a nuanced portrait of her life and her passion for design, art, and humanitarian work with the Red Cross.

These encounters reflect a shared appreciation for design, culture, history, and the people behind meaningful creative work. Through his cultural endeavors, Hjelmqvist has welcomed an array of remarkable guests to his events, including Farah Pahlavi, the last Empress of Iran, and Queen Noor of Jordan, both trained in architecture; Princess Michael of Kent, an author and interior designer; Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, a jewelry designer; the late Marianne Bernadotte, philanthropist and widow of Prince Sigvard of Sweden, internationally known as the “Design Prince” for his contribution to Scandinavian design; and ABBA’s Agnetha Fältskog.

You seem to live design as much as you work with it. What inspires you beyond objects?

Stillness, light, and travel. I find as much inspiration in silence as I do in sound. It might be a certain morning light over the archipelago, the scent of sun-warmed marble and wild herbs in a hillside chapel in Greece, or the vibrant rhythm of a hectic afternoon in Paris or Milan. Inspiration often arrives in contrasts, when beauty catches you off guard. But it only happens when you slow down, pay attention, and leave space for it to find you.

A Personal Aesthetic, A Global Perspective

Hjelmqvist’s perspective on design has been shaped by decades of working across cultures, disciplines, and borders. With a cultivated eye and an instinct for what endures, he has built a career around the connection between aesthetics, identity, and the people who bring ideas to life.

Ultimately, his work is grounded in a simple belief: design is not only about what we see, but how it makes us feel. Through meaningful collaborations, cultural storytelling, and a lasting appreciation for beauty with substance, Hjelmqvist continues to champion a design culture rooted in quality, craftsmanship, and emotional resonance, where elegance is less about style than a way of seeing the world.
