It’s the most wonderful stressful time of the year. Here is your guide to surviving New Years.
New year, new me! Now with 25% more anxiety. Yes, it’s that time of the year again when we are getting ready to embrace the new year and with it, one of our most cherished and frustrating traditions—plummeting into an existential crisis of feeling inferior to everything and everyone.
Because when you really think about it, New Year’s is a pretty stress-packed holiday with insanely high expectations wrapped up in a pretty sparkly package. That being said, we don’t believe the holiday is the issue.Sure, the drunken mass taking over the streets in the name of celebration is kind of hard to ignore, but it’s not exactly likely that someone forces their way into your flat and force-feeds you champagne. In fact, that might be more pleasurable. The problem is the attitude. Every year, we are expected to make lofty promises about bettering ourselves, only to be disappointed when we fall short. How can we not? This holiday is built around celebrating big dreams, which leaves little room for celebrating the small victories that are far more achievable in terms of reality. This means that unless you somehow won the Nobel Peace Prize and cured cancer all in one year, it is easy to feel down this time of year.
We here at L’Officiel Monaco want to remind you to celebrate yourself and any achievements you might have accomplished this year, big or small. This is why we have listed out a few ways you can make the most out of the holiday celebrations with as little stress as possible and enter the new year on your terms.
With New Year’s celebrations, the general attitude is often all or nothing. The same applies to New Year’s resolutions. Bettering your lifestyle is always a popular choice, and a great one at that! In fact, these promises made at the end of the year can act as a catalyst to help you get started on a healthier routine. However, amongst Veganuary, Dry January, and a million other health-centered trends taking over our calendars on January 1st, it is easy to get overwhelmed and then discouraged after a single step back. Sometimes, instituting small changes can be more beneficial in the long run. This is why we advise you to focus on what works for you rather than being too hard on yourself.
They say that your 20s are for wasting time, but we don’t see it that way. There is absolutely no age limit for figuring your life out. You are allowed to fail until you are 189 years old! (Honestly, at 190 years old, you should probably have your life somewhat together.) The point is that you have your whole life to achieve your goals, and one measly New Year’s resolution not kept is the last thing that should get you down.
Have you ever wondered why everyone seems to be doing exceptionally well right on New Years’ Day?One word: overcompensation. No one wants to finish off the year with unfinished goals, so sometimes the easier option is to fake it until… well, when you are not around other people shoving their overcompensation in your face. The truth is that everyone has their own issues to work through, even if they hide them behind wide smiles and superficial achievements. So we promise you, everyone else is not doing better than you. You simply see what they choose to show you. There is no point in comparing yourself to anyone else’s success; just focus on yourself.
