Settled in Monaco with her family for the past six years, Alice has built van Cal on a single intention: that a precious object should do more than adorn, that it should be a tool of light, guiding its wearer to recentre and find gratitude in the present moment. This summer, the house does something rare for a brand of the current era. The brand opens its Flagship Boutique. We met the founder ahead of the launch, at the new Van Cal Fine Jewellery Boutique, located in Fairmont, Monte Carlo.

Alice, founder of van Cal, on craft, gratitude and intention, and why the house is opening its first boutique at the Fairmont Monte Carlo.
1. Let’s begin where everything begins, the making. How does a van Cal piece come into the world?
ALICE: It always starts with an intention. Before there is any gold, there is a feeling I want to translate a moment of joy, of gratitude, of strength or alignment. Some people mark a memory with a tattoo; I create a piece of jewellery instead, so that an emotion can be carried and worn. The colour, the movement of the metal and the choice of stone all flow from that first intention.
We work with natural and precious materials, minerals and metals as the earth gives them. We put it in its best light, set it, let it shine.
Then comes the patience. Our craft was shaped in high end workshops in London and in India, where we learned how flexible gold can be, and that lesson informed everything that followed. For example, our signature transformable piece, the Alice, took four years and at least twenty prototypes before it was right. We wanted a jewel that is beautiful from every angle, delicate and strong at once, that can be worn in several ways across a single day. We do not compromise unless it is genuinely necessary. The piece itself tells us when it is finished.
2. There is always a story behind your work. What is the first one, your earliest memory of jewellery?
ALICE: Playing with my grandmother’s locket. It held photographs of an uncle I sadly never met, and I still wear it discreetly under my clothes on the days I need her strength close to me. That feeling, the quiet energy a single piece can carry, is the whole intention behind the house.
Art runs deep in the family; we count the painter Rubens among our ancestors, and that sense of an artistic lineage has always been present in how I create. I grew up surrounded by independent women, my mother, an art therapist, and my grandmother who built a center near Brussels where people with disabilities could work. Generosity and gratitude were part of the family long before they became part of the brand, and every piece we design carries those stories forward, toward the next generation.
3. And the house itself. What does Van Cal stand for?
ALICE: It stands for gratitude and intention. We create tools of light. Each piece is designed to bring its wearer to feel the best version of themselves and find their inner peace, a reminder to notice gratitude in the present moment
We design jewellery to be worn as a second skin, from morning to evening, timeless yet versatile. We are great believers in colour; there is always a rainbow piece on my wrist, a reminder that we need every colour to enjoy the journey. And in truth, it is the piece that chooses the client, not the other way around. When a client tells us a piece carried her through a difficult challenge, that is Van Cal doing exactly what it was created to do.
4. Until now, Van Cal has reached collectors around the world without a flagship. How would you describe your retail approach so far?
ALICE: We grew the way our generation grows, intimately and internationally at once: through private appointments, bespoke commissions, trusted partners and gatherings where we sit with a client and simply listen to her jewellery dreams. That approach let us reach women across Europe, the Middle East, the United States and beyond, without ever diluting who we are.
But there is a limit to what a screen can offer. You can fall in love with the image of a stone, yet you cannot feel its weight, its temperature, the way it catches the light when you turn your wrist. Our path was always going to lead, one day, to a place where the pieces could be experienced in person, with intention.
Monaco is that place.
5. Why Monaco, and why the Fairmont, for your very first boutique?
ALICE: Monaco has been our home for six years now; I live here with my family, so opening our first boutique in this city feels entirely natural. It is a meeting point of the world, a small place with an extraordinary concentration of people who travel, who value craftsmanship, who understand that the finest things are made slowly.
The Fairmont Monte Carlo sits on the curve of the Grand Prix, between the sea and the city. It is a crossroads of energy and beauty, and that is exactly the atmosphere we want a client to step into. It felt less like choosing a retail location and more like choosing the right room for a conversation.
6. Here is the paradox. You are opening a physical boutique at the very moment everyone says the future belongs to the screen. Why now?
ALICE: Precisely because of the era we are living in. The faster our days fill with screens and instant answers, the more people quietly long for the opposite. They long to be met, to be looked in the eye, to share a conversation that actually means something.
We did not set out to open a shop. We set out to open a place to meet people. The tools of our time are wonderful and we use them every day, but they cannot give you presence. Fine jewellery is one of the last truly human crafts, made by hand, given by hand, passed between generations. It deserves to be experienced in the same spirit: in person, unhurried, with intention.
7. You speak of pieces being experienced rather than simply bought. What changes when someone can finally see, touch and try them?
ALICE: Everything changes. A photograph flattens a jewel; in life it breathes. When a woman discovers that one piece can be worn in several different ways, when she feels how light and yet how present it is, something settles that no description could ever achieve. The piece stops being an object and becomes hers.
Touching a stone is also how trust is built. You watch the colour shift, you feel which gold suits you the best and makes you truly feel like yours. The boutique exists so that this moment, the trying, the turning in the light, the small catch of breath, can finally happen in a room rather than on a screen.
8. You describe the boutique less as a shop than as a space to feel something. What have you designed it to be?
ALICE: It is designed to find our northern star.
We created this space at the Fairmont with one aim: that people feel good, align with light and in harmony with themselves, the moment they arrive. We want each client to feel entirely themselves, and to discover, gently, the colours and the stones that are truly theirs. The space exists to bring people back to their own centre. When clients walk in, the message is very clear: we want them to feel the best version of themselves. That, above all, is what we want at Van Cal.
9. What happens after the boutique experience? How do you think about a client’s relationship with a piece over time?
ALICE: For us it is only the beginning. A creation is made to be lived in, worn as a second skin, transformed and worn in different ways as life changes. We stay close to our clients; many become friends, and we watch their pieces accompany them through births, milestones, hard seasons and joyful ones.
A Van Cal design is meant to hold a feeling and give it back to you, again and again, long after you first put it on.
10. Finally, beyond this opening, what is the vision for Van Cal?
ALICE: To keep creating tools of light, and to let the house grow well beyond any one person. Van Cal creations are designed to make their wearers feel grounded and grateful for every facet and color of life.
This boutique is the next, most human chapter of the story: a place to slow down, to meet, to feel aligned. Above all, Van Cal is a house we hope one day to pass on to our children, so that the intention behind it lives on long after us.
