In the world of Fashion, many signs show that you are a fashion Icon. But the most prestigious and flattering way of earning that title is probably by having a bag named, or even more, renamed, after you. Only a few people have this privilege; here are some of them.
The Kelly – Hermes
What was once the Sac à Dépêches (the Dispatch Bag) was officially renamed in the ’60s, after a famous photograph of Grace Kelly, The Kelly. The Princess of Monaco was trying to hide her pregnancy and shield her baby bump with a Sac à Dépêches. At the time, the pictures were shared in every magazine. An unhoped-for publicity stunt for the French luxury brand, which decided to rename this bag after the one that made it iconic.
The Alexa Bag – Mulberry
The fashion Icon, who was the It Girl of 2010s, had, like other fashion icons, a bag which was named after her. The brand Mulberry saw that she was often seen with their Elkington bag. It was slightly changed, up to date, and called the Alexa Bag. Like her, the bag was described as the It-bag of the 2010s and was recently relaunched. The success and style of Alexa Chung never seemed to fade.
The Lady Dior – Dior
The urban legend says that it’s all thanks to the former First Lady of France, Bernadette Chirac, who wanted to offer a bag to the Princess at one of the political meetings. Previously called the Chouchou Bag, which means favourite in French, it truly belonged to Princess Diana. Small, elegant, and full of beautiful little details, the Princess was often seen with her Chouchou. It was then formally renamed The Lady Dior, by Dior, after her. Once again, a sign that the people’s Princess was also a Fashion Icon and a trendsetter.
The Birkin – Hermes
Maybe the most known of them all, the Birkin. Named after the icon Jane Birkin, the actress, singer, model and probably has the most famous example of its bag being named after a person. Almost as famous as her, the Birkin was actually created from Jean-Louis Damas and Jane’s collaboration. They met, and through conversations, she said that she never had a bag that was practical and that they should create one. Jean-Louis, CEO of Hermes at that time, proposed to do it together so that she would have the perfect and suitable bag for her needs. That’s how the It bag was conceived. She recently admitted in an interview that she doesn’t get any commission on the sale of the bag that wears her name.
The Jackie – Gucci
Revived by Alessandro Michel through his muse, Harry Styles, the Jackie was on everyone and everywhere this summer. The famous Gucci bag has a similar story to the Lady Dior. Jackie Kennedy, the former First Lady of the United States, had been so often photographed with what at the time was the Fifties Constance that Gucci decided to rename it the Jackie. The small bag is now the most known of the brand. The ultimate Prestige for a fashion icon, but see the notoriety of the bag today Jackie Kennedy is genuinely the timeless fashion icon.
