After Prince Charles’ announcement of his infidelity in 1994, Princess Diana reminded the world of her power in the first (and most iconic) revenge dress. After Travis Scott‘s rumored affair in 2022, Kylie Jenner took the opportunity to post her own revenge dress photo. Miley Cyrus did revenge her own way with the release of her “Flowers” music video. On January 12, 2023, Miley Cyrus released “Flowers.” In this billboard-breaking song, Miley Cyrus details her marriage with Liam Hemsworth which lasted from 2018 until 2020. Though the couple met in 2009 while filming The Last Song, their relationship was on-again-off-again until their 2020 divorce. In “Flowers,” Miley sings “We were right ’til we weren’t / Built a home and watched it burn.” She continues, “I can buy my own flowers. I can hold my own hand,” emphasizing her ability to satisfy herself. In the music video for her newest release, Miley wears a gold dress that resembles Jennifer Lawrence‘s (who stars alongside Hemsworth) dress in The Hunger Games. Lawrence and Hemsworth were rumored to have had a fling in 2012.

Coining the term “revenge dress”, Princess Diana made the biggest statement without saying a word. On the same night that Prince Charles admitted to an affair with Camilla Bowles, Princess Diana turned heads in this Stastambolian black, off-the-shoulder dress on her way to a gala at the Serpentine Gallery. Though she was originally rumored to wear Valentino, the Princess of Whales decided to wow the world with this unusually revealing look (for the royal family, that is) instead.
