“Access to pretty pictures is at an all-time high. Story and substance are harder to find.” Danny Lairon says. He is a rising fashion and travel photographer who has made his path through his commitment to sustainability and cultural diversity. His portfolio includes collaborations with Latin American designers and shoots in locations ranging from the bustling streets of New York to the serene lagoons of Bacalar—a repertoire that captures more than just a moment in time—but also a real-time perception of the evolving industry.
The Perfect Shot: Aperture to Innovation
Danny Lairon’s journey began in Mexico’s vibrant and culturally rich landscapes. He found his creative voice photographing local street scenes, festivals, and the natural beauty surrounding him. These formative experiences ignited his passion for storytelling through the lens. “Traveling gave me perspective,” Lairon recounts. “It taught me the most beautiful things in our world are the unscripted moments, the seemingly mundane interactions we have each and every day. I try to capture that natural element in all my work.”
By the time Lairon moved into fashion photography, he had already developed an eye for cultural narratives. His partnership with Latin American designers like Raphaella at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) showcased his ability to blend fashion with deep cultural resonance. For Lairon, it was not just about capturing beautiful clothes but about telling the stories behind them. “These pieces speak to heritage, to the struggle, to leveraging creativity to triumph adversity,” he says.
Fashion Photography Meets Sustainability
At a time when the fashion industry faced increasing scrutiny over its environmental impact, Lairon made sure his photography aligned with sustainable fashion practices. This dedication to sustainability is evident through his collaborations with upcycling designers like San Francisco’s Joanna Jia, whose pieces transform discarded fabrics into high fashion.
Danny Lairon notes, “When you document something reimagined from waste, it elevates the work and introduces substance to the piece. The design then becomes much more than a piece of clothing.” His work with Joanna Jia Couture and other eco-conscious designers is part of a budding movement changing the face of luxury and beauty.
The “Water of Life” from Joanna Jia Couture
Debuting at the Aquarium of the Bayhotographed, the “Water of Life” by Joanna Jia Couture captures the essence of sustainable luxury. Each piece was a homage to the mesmerizing wonders of the sea, crafted to evoke the fluidity and grace of ocean waves. Silks flowed like gentle tides, while the iridescent fabrics shimmered with the colors of coral reefs to mirror the patterns of sea life.
The “Water of Life” is a poignant reminder of the importance of ocean conservation. The collection used a blend of organic materials and recycled fabrics, reflecting Jia’s commitment to sustainable practices. Each garment was made with a sense of purpose, urging the audience to appreciate the profound connection between water and life.
Wander, Wear, and Care
As Lairon prepares for his next venture—filming a sustainable luxury development in Tulum, Mexico —he remains focused on the themes that have shaped his career: sustainability, diversity, and the mixture of fashion and culture. “I wanted to work with Joanna to showcase the elegance that can be created through upcycling & inspire designers to think about the choices they make when they create their collections,” he reflects. “We need to move beyond fast fashion as the only way to manufacture fashion. Audiences today demand more.”
With the world changing in every direction imaginable, it is only natural for the world of photography to capture it in all its wonder. Fashion and travel photography, once focused solely on aesthetics, is evolving into a medium for advocacy, with Danny Lairon behind the lens.
