Bold colours, graphic liners, and overindulge in glitter are the look to strive for right now, all because of a tv show.
The hit drama show Euphoria has wrapped up its second season, and we were left with many feelings, but speechless was not one of them. From Cassie’s frantic morning routine to the gut-punch that was Lexi’s play, we got our weight in content this season. However, one of the most visible takeaways from Euphoria is the extravagant makeup looks that have now made their way from our tv screens into our social media feeds and, with that, into our daily lives.
While beautiful, these makeup looks by themselves are nothing we haven’t seen before. Showgirls did the over the top glitter glam, so remarkable many of us daydreamed of hitting the road and becoming a striptease dancer in a toxic, drugged up fever dream that is Vegas. Even Skins had unique looks, such as Effy’s iconic smokey eye, influencing a generation. However, none of these shows had the same visual impact as Euphoria, which is truly a testament to the skills of Doniella Davy, the makeup artist behind these looks. Davy constructed some of the most euphoric styles imaginable with bright colours and blinding gems and glued them onto characters that, at times, were anything but. There are euphoric scenes in Euphoria (obviously!), but for a large part, the show is dark and deals with complicated subjects. So the choice to pair glitter with human trafficking is so out there that it shouldn’t have worked, but despite all, not only did it work, it went viral.
Countless beauty influencers and makeup artists have shown off their Euphoria inspired looks on social media. We even see a reference to this trend in blockbuster movies such as the new Batman, where the Catwoman is wearing a glittery smokey eye. At the same time, Batman himself rocks a full teenage angst eye makeup. After only two seasons, Euphoria has undoubtedly earned the title of a trendsetter, and we predict this will not be short-lived as we are waiting to see what trends it might throw at us next season.
