The ‘it’ hotel destination in Monte Carlo, Le Meridien Beach Plaza, has added yet another exciting eatery to its dining roster– Smakelijk! It’s the first Belgian brasserie in Monaco. The name means ‘tasty’ in Flemish, and that’s what it’s really about– a gastronomic experience that brings Belgium (and good times) to the table. This 2024 addition follows the successful launch of the restaurant ‘Muse’ in 2023, making Le Meridian Beach Plaza an attractive choice for foodies.
The Ultimate Belgian Cuisine Experience
France may be the gastronomy leader of the world, but its neighbor to the north isn’t far behind. Laurent Colin, the culinary director at Le Meridien Beach Plaza, is leading Smakelijk! Along with Chef Alexandre Lamberet and Pastry Chef Julien Beaulieu.
The brasserie’s menu centers on fresh, high-quality ingredients commonly used in Belgian cuisine. So, Liege meatballs, duck confit, foie gras, home fries, and stuffed tomatoes are on the list.
Of course, a Belgian culinary experience can’t be complete without waffles. So the dessert section includes the classic Brussels waffles and other classics like soufflé and toast
The Excellency of Belgian Beer and Wines
For many, Belgium’s beer and wines are more enticing. After all, Belgian beer has been added to the Unesco Heritage list.
At Smakelijk!, head sommelier Jonathan Durante has curated a versatile menu of drinks featuring the best of Belgium. He’s sourcing the wines from a Brussels-based sustainable winery called Winery Gudule. The proprietor behind the winery, Theirry Lejeune, collaborates with local producers and experiments with tastes and aromas, resulting in a spectacular variety to suit different palettes.
But the Belgian tradition of wine isn’t limited to taste; it also extends to service. They’ve incorporated subtle details like candle decanting, basket service, and using port tongs to open the bottles.
Smakelijk! is as much about wine and beers as it’s about food.
Embracing Art Nouveau in Decor
The design studio Adjamé chose to revisit the 20th-century Belgian Art Nouveau for the restaurant’s decor and ambiance. Designers Alice Calemard and Talissa Bachelot have worked on other Le Meridien Beach Plaza projects, including Muse and the ‘915’ private apartment.
Some types of art are just made for the interiors, and the vibrant Art Nouveau theme is just that. The restaurant boasts stripes and florals in bright but warm green, blue, and grey hues. Even though there are elements like tavern-style earthenware and floral wallpaper walls, the decor is also contemporary.
Some decor materials, like service consoles and shelves, have been acquired from flea markets, once again showing the brasserie’s commitment to sustainability. The upholstery has been made by local craftsmen. Flowers like tulips, irises, and cornflowers bring a touch of nature into the decor. The brasserie is highly ‘Instagrammable.’
A Worthy Addition
Smakelijk! promises to be a delightful experience with signature Belgian elements in both the food and visual aesthetics. The menu covers all the regions of Belgium, allowing guests to take a culinary journey through Brussels, Wallonia, and Flanders. And for those who like their beer or wine, there are traditional Belgian brews and wines.
