Created by The Weeknd and Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson, The Idol is HBO’s next big production. The Idol is an American drama television series that explores the sordid of fame.
It focuses on an aspiring pop idol, Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who, after having a nervous breakdown that causes her last tour to be cancelled, decides to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in America, along with the start of a complex relationship with Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a supportive mentor and the head of a contemporary cult.
Apart from The Weeknd, and Lily-Rose Deep, the casting includes many other well-known celebrities such as; Jennie Kim, star of the Kpop group Blackpink, Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan, Rachel Sennott, David Zissis, Hari Nef, Juliebeth Gonzalez, Anne Heche, Elizabeth Berkley, Nico Hiraga and Melanie Liburd.
The Idol is a series from A24, a highly respected American production company known for creating acclaimed movies such as Spring Breakers, Midsommar, The Witch, Hereditary, and The Lighthouse, as well as popular series like Euphoria. The production team involves The Weeknd and Sam Levinson, as well as renowned producers Nick Hall (The White Lotus), Ashley Levinson (Euphoria), and Sara E. White (Grey’s Anatomy).
The miniseries has six-episode on the list, with two already released; Pop Tarts & Rat Tales, released on June 4, and Double Fantasy, released on June 11. Episode 3, Daybreak, will release on June 18; as for the other episodes, we have yet to determine their title, however, episode 4 will come on June 25, episode 5 on July 2 and the final episode on July 9.
The highly anticipated series premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 22, 2023, receiving a five-minute standing ovation from the audience after the screening of its first two episodes.
Sam Levinson added to the excitement by revealing that the show is set in the same universe as his other HBO series, Euphoria. This marks the fifth television series showcased at the festival, following Carlos, Too Old to Die Young, Twin Peaks, and Irma Vep. Fans can catch the series on HBO and Max starting June 4, 2023.
