Heritage Reimagined: Stefano Aimone and the Future of Italian Fashion

Italy is a country where heritage is not simply preserved—it is lived. From architecture and design to gastronomy and, of course, fashion, the Italian spirit finds expression in craftsmanship passed down through generations. Nowhere is this more evident than in the refined world of luxury textiles, where tradition and innovation coexist in a delicate yet dynamic balance.

Stefano Aimone represents a new chapter in this lineage—a modern creative shaped by both his roots and a forward-looking vision. Born in 1981 in Turin and raised amidst the quiet elegance of the countryside near Biella, he grew up surrounded by a culture of enlightened industriousness, in a region globally revered for its textile artistry. A self-taught designer with a profound appreciation for nature and purity of form, Stefano honed his sensibility across Milan, Switzerland, and Antwerp, embracing the understated elegance and minimalist values of northern Europe.

Inspired by his grandfather, Ermenegildo Zegna—whose early support helped bring Agnona to life—Stefano has remained grounded in the philosophy of creating “only beautiful things.” In 2020, while serving as Head of Design at Z Zegna, he found himself increasingly drawn to Agnona’s unique legacy. By early 2021, with both conviction and clarity, he acquired the house from the Zegna Group, stepping into the dual role of CEO and Creative Director.

Today, Stefano Aimone leads Agnona into a new era—one defined by timeless modernity, quiet luxury, and a dedication to honoring the brand’s storied past while fearlessly shaping its future. His story is one of continuity and reinvention, of family legacy and personal vision. It is the story of a “creative entrepreneur” determined to revive and redefine Italian elegance for a contemporary world. L’Officiel Monaco invites you into the world of fashion through the perspective of Stefano Aimone—who shares rare insight, creative vision, and thoughtful advice for the next generation.

Growing up in the tranquil countryside near Biella, surrounded by Italy’s rich textile tradition—how has this early environment shaped your creative identity?
The place where I was born has always been more than just a backdrop—it’s the cradle of my creativity and the foundation of everything I pursue. Growing up immersed in nature gave me a deep, instinctive bond with the environment, one that still shapes how I think, feel, and create. Nature isn’t just a source of inspiration—it’s a vital presence I instinctively weave into every idea and project.
At the same time, I was surrounded by the world of textiles from a very young age. It was part of the air I breathed, woven into daily life. That early exposure sparked a lasting fascination with materials, textures, and the stories they carry. Over the years, this dual influence—nature and textiles—has profoundly shaped my aesthetic and creative approach. They’re not separate paths, but two forces that have grown and evolved together within me.
Even now, in all that I make, I carry both of those legacies: the organic intuition of the natural world and the refined intelligence of fabric. Together, they continue to guide my process, inform my choices, and define my identity as a creative.

Your design education spanned Milan, Switzerland, and Antwerp. How have these diverse cultural influences informed your aesthetic sensibility today?
My design education and professional journey across Milan, Switzerland, and Antwerp have each played a unique role in shaping my aesthetic sensibility.
Milan gave me a strong foundation in Italian elegance and craftsmanship—it’s where I developed a deep respect for sartorial tradition and attention to detail. Growing up in Biella, a city rooted in textile excellence, I was naturally drawn to materials, textures, and the industrial expertise they embody.
Switzerland, through my work with VF Group, introduced me to a more technical and functional approach, especially in jeanswear and activewear. There, I mastered innovating within constraints, focusing on performance, construction, and fabric research—skills that still influence my creative process today.
Antwerp added a conceptual, avant-garde dimension. Its independent and experimental spirit encouraged me to explore creative freedom, challenge conventions, and find my own voice. Together, these experiences have taught me to balance structure and intuition, tradition and innovation, cultivating a design philosophy that is both grounded and forward-thinking. They continue to inform the way I work—always rooted in quality and authenticity, yet open to evolution and new narratives.

What is your long-term vision for Agnona under your leadership?
Agnona’s expansion strategy is advancing on multiple fronts, focusing strongly on internationalization and strengthening our brand identity. Over 90% of our sales come from abroad, with key markets including South Korea, United States, and the UK. In Europe, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland remain our primary reference countries.
Our growth plan starts here: we are reopening iconic retail locations such as Harrods and launching new boutiques, including one in Saint-Tropez. Additionally, we are undertaking a major development project in China and plan to open two new stores in South Korea by 2026.
This expansion unfolds amid significant transformation in the fashion and luxury industries—characterized by the slowdown in the Chinese market, global wholesale uncertainty, and ongoing shifts in textiles. To navigate these challenges, we remain committed to organic growth, staying true to our philosophy of “creating only beautiful things” through a strategic and adaptable approach.
Beyond retail, we are expanding our Milan headquarters with a real estate development that will create new spaces dedicated to celebrating our heritage, values, and craftsmanship. A new flagship store in Milan is also slated to open in early 2026.

Your grandfather, Ermenegildo Zegna, famously believed in “making only beautiful things.” How do you carry this philosophy forward at Agnona?
“Doing only beautiful things” is more than a philosophy—it’s a guiding principle behind every decision we make. In a complex industry like fashion, this idea remains strong and relevant thanks to four core values: respect, dedication, calm, and passion.
Passion for materials, craftsmanship, and the kind of quality that gains value over time. Respect for the brand, its founder, and all who uphold its values and legacy. Dedication to the work, to details, and to the relentless pursuit of perfection in every product. And finally, calm—because everything needs time to grow and take shape in a meaningful, lasting way.
When I joined Agnona, I approached it as a guest—entering with humility and curiosity. Each day, I discover more about the founder and the brand’s remarkable history. This journey unfolds step by step, with time and experience naturally shaping the creative rebirth.
For us, “doing only beautiful things” means creating with intention, patience, and the respect necessary to honor a precious legacy while leading it into the future.

Saint-Tropez now hosts an Agnona boutique—a destination known for its elegance and style. What does this new opening represent for the brand?
We inaugurated our seasonal boutique in Saint-Tropez in June last year, attracted by the unique character and timeless elegance of this iconic destination. For both myself and the brand, Saint-Tropez holds deep personal and creative significance, embodying the refined leisure that lies at the heart of Agnona’s aesthetic.
The location naturally aligns with our vision of discreet luxury and contemporary sophistication. Its distinctive light, relaxed pace, and understated glamour perfectly capture how we conceive summer dressing: effortless yet refined, intimately connected to place and atmosphere.
More than a seasonal retail presence, this boutique is a meaningful expression of Agnona’s identity—a genuine dialogue between brand and environment that inspires and resonates.

What advice would you offer to young entrepreneurs aspiring to succeed in the fashion industry?
My first piece of advice is to stay true to your vision. In an industry that constantly shifts between trends and noise, clarity of purpose will set you apart. Take the time to define what you truly believe in—what you want to express and why.
Second, remember that fashion is not just about creativity—it also requires structure, discipline, and resilience. Balance inspiration with execution. Learn to listen, embrace collaboration, and never underestimate the importance of craftsmanship and quality.
Be curious. Study the past, understand the present, and stay open to innovation.
Finally, don’t rush. Growth—both personal and professional—takes time. Give your ideas the space they need to mature. When you create with respect, dedication, and consistency, the right audience will find you.

Away from the world of fashion and business, what are the personal pleasures or quiet pastimes that bring you joy?
I love nature in all its versatility and grandeur—being able to immerse myself, get lost, explore, and contemplate its landscapes, whether by the sea or in the mountains.
I’m also passionate about the infinite world of art, from painting to industrial design, constantly seeking out unique and precious pieces that inspire me and shape the environment around me. And of course, cuisine—being a true Italian, I love to eat, though in moderation. What I truly enjoy is cooking: working with raw ingredients, combining flavors, and discovering new ways to create dishes that evoke unexpected emotions.
Lately, I’ve also started getting closer to the world of gardening and beekeeping—a journey that allows me to deepen my connection with nature, learn its rhythms, and explore how to bring its authenticity into what I create.
