You made the rare choice to set up your own firm as soon as you took the oath. What led you to favor independence so early in your career?
I wanted, whatever the cost, to be independent right away. I was quite resistant to authority, and I was aware of the unfortunate fate of too many colleagues—young associates mistreated in certain firms. I also wanted to practice my own vision of the profession and apply my own defense strategy, based on strong pugnacity while adapting to the presiding judge.
Practicing in Bobigny, one of the most demanding courts in France, is a school in itself. How did this environment shape your approach to criminal law?
Bobigny is one of the French courts where conditions are the most difficult: a very challenging clientele, capped fees, and an outdated courthouse (when I started in 2018, there was no light in the restrooms and flooding regularly affected the main hall…). But at the same time, once you’ve experienced that, you’re no longer afraid of anything! I have absolutely no regrets about this experience, especially because of the kindness of the staff and fellow attorneys there.
Criminal law often confronts the intimate and the extreme. How do you manage to preserve a balance between human commitment and legal rigor?
This is my obsession as an attorney: finding the perfect alchemy between a deep understanding of the case—so that my client is satisfied and the court does not overlook any essential element—and, at the same time, being legally precise in my arguments while remaining creative. It is the only way to be truly respected by judges and to win their conviction.

You practice both general criminal law and white-collar criminal law. In your view, what distinguishes the defense of an individual from that of a company executive or investor?
In reality, when practicing white-collar criminal law, it is preferable to have started with general criminal law. Only the offenses change; the procedure remains exactly the same. What is added in white-collar crime is the protection of the client’s reputation, as the client is often a notable figure—unlike some detained clients for whom this criterion may be secondary. But once again, what makes the difference is having a sufficient level of empathy to understand my client and their case, while never forgetting that we are bound by legal rules that we must know inside out. In criminal matters, contrary to what one might think, approximation is prohibited and can never lead to victory. Only surgical precision can convince a judge, who is above all a very rational and Cartesian individual, rightly expecting material arguments above all else.
Your clientele includes high-profile individuals and economic decision-makers. How do you handle the issues of discretion and reputation inherent in these cases?
I very often favor discretion over media noise, unless it is the client’s wish (which is rather rare in practice). I try to spare them a public trial and to clear them of suspicion as soon as possible. In this field, discretion is the key word.
Your dress style is both understated and assertive. What role does elegance play in your profession, and do you think appearance influences how an attorney is perceived before the courts?
I have been passionate about fashion since I was very young. It is a taste passed down to me by my mother and my late grandfather, who used to have his bespoke suits made in England. An attorney must be impeccable in substance but also in form; this has always been obvious to me. It is a matter of respect for oneself and for others. I am convinced that when a judge sees an attorney who has made the effort to appear before him wearing a tie, a clean robe, and polished loafers, he can only feel respected. And a judge who feels respected is more inclined to listen to you—especially since shoes and the tie are the only visible items of clothing under the robe!

You view your profession as a high-level sport. What personal disciplines allow you to maintain this level of excellence over time?
Being a criminal defense attorney is a high-level sport. I quickly understood that stress levels are far higher than in most other professions, which also justifies our high fees. The intensity of our cases has a negative impact on our health, and it is normal that we are compensated for this. My only remedy: sports at least three times a week (Thai boxing), no smoking, no alcohol during the week, all combined with a personal life that I want to be as stable as possible. This is my personal view, but to last decades in this profession, these ingredients are essential. Stress cannot be vented for free on an intern or an associate…
Finally, in a legal world undergoing constant change, how do you define excellence in criminal defense today?
For me, the elite criminal attorney is one who knows how to combine tradition with modernity. Tradition means respect for one’s peers, especially older ones; respect for judges who administer justice under sometimes very difficult conditions (some finish immediate appearance hearings at 3 a.m.); and above all, respect for the profession itself—an attorney cannot speak just any way or dress however he likes. As for modernity, it means using digital tools to reach a much higher level of technical expertise (artificial intelligence, direct access to information, deeper analysis), all while, of course, taking into account the knowledge handed down by our elders.
